Dear La Vega Junior High School George Dixon families,
Welcome returning and new families to the 2018-2019 school year! We are excited to begin our academic year, as many great things are in store for us at LVJHGD.
We have amazing teachers who spend hours planning and creating classroom activities to engage our students in learning. Our teachers utilize best practices and analyze data to best meet the needs of our students. It is our vision that all students reach their full potential!
We at La Vega Junior High School George Dixon Campus pride ourselves in facilitating a warm, caring, and student centered school that has been created through a partnership among faculty, staff, parents, students, and community members alike.
We are committed to our three core values: respect, responsibility and safety and we will focus on these values each and every day. We have created a school community where every students' individuality and needs are considered when our instructional practices and enhanced programs are implemented.
We are all ready to start a new school year filled with some exciting new challenges and outstanding opportunities. Please take a couple of minutes to review a few of our campus procedures in order to facilitate a smooth and productive school year.
~The safety of our children is our number one priority. We now have an officer on campus throughout the school day.
~All guests will be buzzed into the office. Guests who have business to attend to throughout the building, must provide his/her driver’s license (no exceptions). All driver’s licenses are checked through our raptor system.
~Upon clearance, badges are created. Guests are expected to wear badges throughout their time within the school campus.
~Please make sure we have your current phone number and email to receive calls/ texts/emails).
~Our school hours are 7:30-3:45 Monday- Friday, and 7:30-5:30 on designated tutorial and enrichment days.
~Doors will open at 7:30 am. Please be aware that staff is not available before 7:30. Students dropped off before 7:30 will not have supervision.
~Instruction begins promptly at 8:10 am.
~Students who are not in their classrooms at 8:10 am will be considered tardy.
~“Official” attendance is taken at a specific time each day, attendance is taken every class period and action will be taken for excessive absences in any class.
~When a student is absent from school, the student—upon arrival or return to school—must bring a note signed by the parent that describes the reason for the absence.
~A phone call from the parent is encouraged, but the district requires a written note.
~The campus will document attendance records for the student whether the absence is considered by the district to be excused or unexcused.
~Within 3 days of returning to school, a student absent for more than 5 consecutive days because of a personal illness must bring a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school. Otherwise, the student’s absence may be considered unexcused and, if so, would be considered to be in violation of compulsory attendance laws.
~At the beginning of the year, every student will be issued a Chromebook for daily class. Chromebooks will not be taken home. All students must comply to the rules and regulations regarding Chromebook use and care.
~Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the instructional day. If you need to reach your child, please call the front office for assistance.
~Grades, attendance etc…may be checked as often as necessary by accessing the Parent Portal account.
~Report cards will be printed and sent home.
~Please remember that student attendance is crucial to learning.
~We ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours as much as reasonably possible.
~Also note that picking up a child early on a regular basis results in missed opportunities for learning.
~Unless the principal has granted approval because of extenuating circumstances, a student will not regularly be released before the end of the school day.
~State rules require that parental consent be obtained before any student is allowed to leave campus for any part of the school day.
The district has put the following procedures in place in order to document parental consent:
~A parent or otherwise authorized adult must come to the office and sign the student out.
~Please be prepared to show identification.
~Once an identity is verified, a campus representative will then call for the student or collect the student and bring him or her to the office.
~For safety purposes and stability of the learning environment, we cannot allow you to go to the classroom or other area unescorted to pick up the student.
~If the student returns to campus the same day, the parent or authorized adult must sign the student back in through the main office upon the student’s return.
~Documentation regarding the reason for the absence will also be required.
~Parents must call before 3:00 pm or write a note in order for any transportation changes to take place, otherwise students will be dismissed as usual. However, we do recognize true emergencies.
~To maintain safety for all students, bus riders will be held accountable for following all code of conduct/rules/ safety procedures of Durham Transportation.
~Car riders will be dismissed out of the front doors of the school building at 3:45.
~Staff members will be on afternoon duty to aide in the quick and effective use of our car lines and to ensure the safety of our children. Your patience and putting safety first for our children in the dismissal process is appreciated.
